MyEnergy Insights is a handy tool that can help give you more control over your energy usage. Having a better idea of how power is being used can help to manage your bill and increase your home’s efficiency. So, what is MyEnergy Insights, and how does it work?

What is MyEnergy Insights?

MyEnergy Insights is a digital tool in your Nova Scotia Power online account, MyAccount, that details your approximate energy usage by appliance within your home or business. It uses data from your smart meter and artificial intelligence to give you a look into your current and historical energy use, patterns, and costs. It shows your usage broken down by appliance or equipment, offers energy-saving tips, and allows you to set personalized usage or budget notifications by email or text.

Appliance itemization is powered by disaggregation—a process that takes the energy usage data from your smart meter and uses an algorithm to estimate the amount of energy used by each kind of appliance. Each appliance uses electricity in unique manner, leaving an “appliance fingerprint”. We detect and extract these “fingerprints” and convert the data into useful insights and recommendations.

What are the insights?

MyEnergy Insights breaks down your usage in a few different ways. One particularly helpful tool is the energy usage by appliance. For example, it will tell you approximately how much power is used on laundry and cleaning, refrigeration, or lighting. It also provides your estimated energy cost history, allowing you to see how you’ve used power month-over-month, and year-over-year.

Seasonal temperatures are often drivers of energy use—whether it is increased heating in the winter or air conditioning in the summer. MyEnergy Insights overlays historical temperatures with your energy usage to help you see why certain appliance categories, like heating and cooling, would have fluctuated over time.
