Nova Scotia Power’s Grassroots Grant helps Milton Community Garden Grow Connections in Queens County
Halifax, NS – What was once the Milton Centennial Pool is now a thriving community garden bringing neighbours together in Queens County.
After the pool closed in 2023 following flood damage, the Milton Community Association worked with residents to reimagine the space. A community garden quickly emerged as the preferred option, creating a shared outdoor space where residents can grow vegetables and flowers while connecting with one another.
The project was made possible through the support of volunteers, local businesses, and community partners who donated materials, soil, tools, and supplies. Nova Scotia Power's Grassroots Grants program also helped bring the vision to life by funding key infrastructure, including additional raised garden beds.
"The Grassroots Grant took this from an idea and a conversation and helped the Milton community garden become a reality," said Alex Gallagher, Vice President of the Milton Community Association. “This space has and will continue to bring people together.”
Since opening, the garden has grown from 18 raised beds to more than 25, with plans for future expansion. Beyond gardening, the space has become a gathering place where neighbours share knowledge, lend a hand, and build lasting connections.
The project has transformed a former community landmark into a vibrant outdoor space that continues to strengthen community ties and create new opportunities for residents to come together.
