Staying safe on Halloween

Halloween is just around the corner, and excitement is building across Nova Scotia. From spooky decorations to creative costumes, it’s a time for fun—but also a time to keep safety in mind. With shorter days and more people out and about after dark, it’s important to take precautions to make sure everyone enjoys Halloween safely. Check out these tips to keep you, your family, and your community safe this Halloween.

Stay Visible

With the sun setting earlier, visibility becomes a safety concern for Halloween night. Make sure trick-or-treaters can be easily seen by drivers and others by bringing flashlights, carrying glow sticks. and wearing light reflective clothing. Stick to well-lit neighborhoods and avoid dark paths or unlit streets to stay safe.

Keep Electrical Safety in Mind

Remember to keep decorations away from powerlines and electrical equipment. Although it can look cool, never hang lights on power lines or utility poles—instead, opt for nearby trees or bushes. If you’re using extension cords outdoors, make sure they are rated for outdoor use and keep them dry to avoid electrical hazards, especially in wet weather.

Light Pumpkins Safely

Instead of keeping candles burning in Jack-o’-lanterns for long periods of time, consider using battery powered candles or LED lights for a safer glow. Place them on a flat surface away from any flammable decorations to help prevent accidents and keep everyone safe.

Prepare for Wet Weather

If rain is in the forecast for Halloween night, plan for wet and slippery conditions. Wear waterproof footwear, carry umbrellas or rain gear, and watch your step on wet driveways and sidewalks. If the wind picks up, bring outdoor decorations inside to prevent them from blowing near powerlines or blocking sidewalks.

From all of us at Nova Scotia Power, have a safe and happy Halloween!
