Emergency preparedness: What to pack in your emergency kit

When a power outage happens, it’s important to be prepared so you can stay comfortable and safe—especially during a storm. It’s why every Nova Scotian home should have an emergency kit on hand.

To make sure you’re ready for storm season, we’re sharing our guide to packing an emergency kit.

Start with the essentials.

The foundation of every kit should include a few key items:

  • 1 gallon of water per person, per day (we recommend packing at least 2-3 days’ worth)
  • A flashlight and extra batteries
  • A first aid kit
  • Medications and any other items you know you’ll need like baby formula, pet food, medical accessories, diapers, etc.
  • Nonperishable food like canned goods, peanut butter, granola bars, cereal, and dried fruit—don’t forget your can opener!

Pack for comfort.

Once you’re well stocked with the fundamentals, it’s time to think about the extras you’ll want to have easily accessible. This can include:

  • Warm blankets, sweaters and sleeping bags
  • A camp stove and fuel (just remember to use it outside)
  • Towels
  • A deck of cards or other games
  • A portable phone charger
  • A battery powered radio—if your phone dies, it’s helpful to have a reliable back-up so you can tune in to the news and weather reports

Store everything in one central location.

An emergency kit isn’t helpful if you’re not sure where to find it! Pack your kit in a storage bin and make sure you choose an easy to access location, so you’re not searching in the dark.

Finally, remember to add our outage line—1-877-428-6004—to your list of emergency numbers so you can report an outage. You can find the latest outage information and estimated restoration times at outagemap.nspower.ca.
