Celebrating Diwali

Celebrating Diwali

November 14 marks the last day of Diwali. Diwali is the Hindu Festival of Lights that takes place annually to celebrate light over darkness and mark the beginning of the fiscal year in India. Observed by more than a billion people from a variety of faiths, the five days of Diwali are marked by prayer, feasts, fireworks, family gatherings, and charitable giving.

We caught up with two of our employees, Shiva John (Customer Service Associate) and Riddhima Kundra (Talent Acquisition Specialist), to learn a little bit more.

What does Diwali mean to you?

Shiva: Diwali is the time when we, as a Hindu society, help to share light over darkness and to help the universe become a better place to live. The Goddess of Kali/Durga/Parvati is the Universal Mother and she teaches us to be more compassionate towards others, to share our joy with kindness, and to be that light from their darkness.

Riddhima: Diwali can hold different meanings for different people. For me, it's a time for celebrating the victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance. The specific significance of Diwali can also vary based on one's cultural and religious background. Ultimately, what Diwali means to you may be a personal and cultural interpretation of these themes and traditions.

How do you celebrate Diwali?

Shiva: Diwali is the celebration of light. It is also a celebration of our Lord Rama, who after 14 years in the forest fighting the evils of the world, came back to his kingdom. We light up the streets to welcome him back and thank him for helping us overcome these evils.

Riddhima: Diwali is a time for family gatherings, sharing delicious food, exchanging gifts, lighting lamps and fireworks, and offering prayers to goddess Laxmi.

If there was one thing you want people to know about Diwali what would it be?

Shiva: Celebrate the way of light not just on this special day, but everyday in your life. When we share the light of compassion and kindness, the world becomes a better and just society, which benefits everyone. We have too many wars and misunderstanding of ideas and people all over are suffering. We are the only ones that can solve it by celebrating light.

Riddhima: To spread love, joy, and happiness.
