Hydro is the world's largest renewable source of electricity, providing for 15 per cent of global electricity needs. In Canada, hydro supplies 60 per cent of the nation's needs.
Our province has a 100-year history of using small hydro developments on our rivers to generate power. The first hydro plant was installed in 1903 by mining interests on the Liscomb River in Guysborough County. Today, there are 32 generating stations on 16 river systems throughout Nova Scotia.
