This fall, NS Power will be collecting traditional lights and exchanging them for new LED holiday lights at participating local tree lighting ceremonies across Nova Scotia. Bring in two sets of glass holiday lights for recycling and receive one set of LED holiday lights for free.
Last year, 59 Nova Scotian communities exchanged approximately 22,000 strands of old holiday lights for 10, 834 new LED strings- that’s enough to power 85 average Nova Scotian homes.
The program is now in its sixth year and we want to encourage more communities to take part. The deadline for communities to register is October 15, 2010. For more information or to sign up, please contact Barry Walker at (902) 428-6429 or nspower.ca.
Since the beginning, the exchanges have attracted attention:

| 2006 | 12 | 2,765 | 27,250 |
| 2007 | 24 | 5,622 | 30,005 |
| 2008 | 41 | 7,475 | 25,345 |

As of November 2009, it is estimated that 4,600,710 watts have been saved through this program; the equivalent of powering 102 average homes for a year.
LEDs are widely available at local retailers in a variety of colours, string lengths and bulb sizes.
