The next wave of cutting-edge technology is home battery storage.

A home battery storage system stores energy in two ways. If your home has an alternative energy source like solar panels, the energy generated can be captured and stored in the home battery storage system to use later. Alternatively, the home battery storage system can charge directly from the grid, such as during off-peak hours when our Time-of-Day (TOD) rates are lower. The battery can provide energy during peak hours when rates are higher to offset your electricity costs. The battery can also be used as a backup power source in the event of an outage.

Please note that battery storage alone is not eligible for the TOD rate but your home can take advantage of the TOD rate if a thermal storage heating system is already installed in the home.

Testing battery storage in Elmsdale

The Intelligent Feeder Project involves residential energy storage batteries (Tesla Powerwalls) installed at 10 homes in the Elmsdale community and a much larger grid-sized battery (Tesla Powerpack) at the Elmsdale substation. These batteries are connected to an electrical line powered, in part, by the nearby Hardwood Lands wind turbines. Sensors on the powerline monitor and gather data about local system activity and are fed back to our control centre for analysis and planning of Nova Scotia’s future energy needs.
