Nova Scotia Power preparing for impending storm

January 24, 2019

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia Power is activating its Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) at 2 p.m. today, (JANUARY 24) in advance of an impending storm.

“Weather forecasts are calling for heavy rain and high winds gusting 80 to 90 km/h across Nova Scotia beginning this evening and continuing into Friday,” said Matt Drover, Nova Scotia Power’s Storm Lead. “We’re preparing for the storm by positioning power line crews and forestry teams across the province, and we’re staffing up our Customer Care Centre.”

The EOC provides centralized coordination for outage restoration planning and response, as well as liaison with the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office (EMO). It is staffed with employees representing all aspects of the company. Nova Scotia Power will operate its EOC until the last customer is safely restored.

“Typically with high wind gusts, we see outages caused by trees contacting or falling on power lines,” said Drover. “When winds are gusting above 80 km/hour, our crews have to make on-site assessments of whether to stand down for safety. We will be ready to begin restoration efforts as soon as it’s safe to do so.”
