Nova Scotia Power Makerspace officially opens its doors for Cape Breton start-up community

March 25, 2019

SYDNEY, NS - Cape Breton start-ups, entrepreneurs and students have a new place to grow their ideas, collaborate, and bring innovative products to life. The Nova Scotia Power Makerspace officially opened its doors in Sydney’s north end today.

Members of the public are invited to drop by and check out the facility – located at 100-37 Nepean Street– today from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.

Managed by Innovacorp, this 4,000 sq. ft. multipurpose, collaborative space will provide equipment, materials, and meeting space for the Cape Breton start-up community. This includes a general work area, a tool library, a metal working shop, a selection of woodworking tools, and an electronics/robotics lab with 3D drawing and printing abilities.

"I believe the Makerspace provides a great opportunity for local entrepreneurs to work on prototype ideas with minimal investment," said Stewart Whynott, senior plant manager of Cape Breton’s Lingan Generating Station. "Hopefully this will lead to small businesses supplying goods to market, creating jobs and spurring growth in the Cape Breton economy."

Nova Scotia Power contributed $250,000 to help facilitate the development, growth and operation of the Makerspace, with a goal of inspiring innovation and encouraging opportunities for economic development.

"If you look at the history of Cape Breton, you’ll see great creativity and shining examples of places where people could gather to build things," said Bob Pelley, Innovacorp’s regional manager for Cape Breton and Northern Nova Scotia. "Today, if you’re looking for a place to design and build something great, the Nova Scotia Power Makerspace will provide you with the inspiration, space, equipment, materials and education to get it done."
