Nova Scotia Power crews engaged in storm restoration

November 29, 2018

HALIFAX – Nova Scotia Power crews worked steadily through the overnight hours to safely restore power to more than 12,000 customers as a storm with heavy, wet snow, rain and high winds sweeps across the province. As of 6:30 a.m., approximately 23,000 customers are without power.

The storm is forecasted to bring heavy snowfall and high winds gusting over 80 km/h, and will continue to affect Nova Scotia throughout today and into Friday, with the biggest impact expected to be felt in the northeastern part of the province and Cape Breton.

“Crews made steady progress overnight despite challenging conditions,” said Sean Borden, Nova Scotia Power Storm Lead. “Power outages are primarily being caused by wet, heavy snow weighing trees into power lines. We are ready to respond – crews are deployed across the province and will restore affected customers as quickly as it’s safe to do so.”

Wind gusts and heavy snowfall are creating challenging travel conditions and may delay restoration efforts in some areas. Nova Scotia Power is coordinating with provincial and municipal transportation departments to obtain safe access to outage locations, as needed.

Nova Scotia Power has over 500 people dedicated to storm response today, including powerline technicians, forestry crews, damage assessors, engineers, wiring inspectors, safety specialists, customer care associates, work planners and supervisors. Crews will begin restoring power as soon as it’s safe to do so, but when winds are gusting above 80 km/h, they will to make on-site assessments of whether to stand down for safety.

As crews can assess damage in individual outage locations, estimated restoration times will be updated. Customers are encouraged to stay tuned to outagemap.nspower.ca or call the Outage Line at 1-877-428-6004 for the latest outage information.
