NS Power invites applicants for 2012 Aboriginal Scholarship

January 9, 2012

HALIFAX, NS -- Nova Scotia Power is inviting eligible candidates across the province to apply for its annual Aboriginal Scholarship, which will be awarded in mid-2012.

“At Nova Scotia Power (NSP), we believe our people are our greatest asset. The Aboriginal Scholarship is one way in which Nova Scotia Power is reaching out to young aboriginal Nova Scotians to help them succeed and realize their potential,” said NSP CEO Rob Bennett. “Providing opportunities to learn and grow is essential to developing a dynamic and inclusive workforce. NSP is committed to doing its part to help build the strong, healthy communities of tomorrow.”

Nova Scotia Power’s Aboriginal Scholarship, which was first awarded in 2011, offers a $1,500 entrance scholarship to a graduating aboriginal high school student. The scholarship can be used at an accredited institution offering post-secondary education and is renewable for up to four years (and totaling up to $6,000), leading to a certificate, diploma or degree. Recipients are also eligible to participate in a work term with Nova Scotia Power.

“Nova Scotia Power’s Aboriginal Scholarship has proved to be a timely and thoughtful support as I pursue training to become a Forest Technologist,” said last year’s scholarship winner Luke Skerry of New Ross, who is currently studying at the Maritime College of Forest Technology. “I encourage other potential candidates within the aboriginal community to apply and benefit from this opportunity.”

The application deadline for next year’s scholarship is April 29, following which a selection committee, made up of Nova Scotia Power Employees will review the applications, and make its decisions based on criteria including, academic record, leadership and service to the community, involvement in extra-curricular activities and the written essay portion of the application.
