Four steps to storm safety

Each year, we partner with the Atlantic Red Cross to spread the message of storm safety. Our Director of Safety, Sean Brennan, was recently on CTV Morning Live to say that while we can’t control Mother Nature, being prepared for storms can help you stay calm, stay informed, and stay safe.

Stay Prepared

We encourage all customers to be prepared when bad weather is on the way, in case there are power outages. On average our power outages are less than two hours, but during and after severe storms, outages can be longer depending on the level of damage to our system. We recommend having batteries for flashlights, charging your devices that we all rely on to keep us entertained at times, and any other supplies that will help you keep comfortable while we work safely and quickly to restore your power.

Stay Calm

We know that Nova Scotians rely on electricity to go about their daily lives and it can sometimes be challenging carry on simple activities like making supper and, in some cases, staying warm or pulling water from your well, during a longer outage. Being prepared can help you stay calm, and just know that our crews – who could be your neighbour or the person behind you in line at the grocery store – are working safely, and quickly to restore your power.

Stay Safe

Damages incurred during a storm can create unsafe conditions for crews, and for the public. There are times when we have downed lines and poles due to trees falling on lines, when we aren’t able to send in our crews until we have completed a full assessment to confirm that it is safe to do so. These are trained professionals – so, it really isn’t safe for the general public to be in close proximity to this type of damage. Please stay clear, report it to us, and we’ll make sure that trained crews are sent out to safely assess for repairs.

Stay Informed

We strongly encourage customers to stay informed before, during and after a storm by checking out our Outage Centre on our website, following our social media channels, or calling us directly. Our outage map refreshes every 15 minutes and provides an estimated time of restoration to give customers an idea of how long it will take to restore power, based on current conditions
