Battery Storage 101


Home batteries are typically mounted on a wall, and they connect to both the grid and your home through your electrical panel. They charge by drawing power from the grid—ideally at off-peak times or when there is excess clean energy available. Then, in the event of an outage, the batteries can power essential items that you have selected in your home like your refrigerator. Your home battery system can detect a grid outage and automatically kick in.

The typical capacity of a single home battery storage system ranges from 5kWh to 19kWh. This can be enough to power your home’s essentials for a few days. Depending on the size of your battery, for example, you can power your fridge, WiFi, phone/laptop charging, and a few lights for 24 hours or more. By way of comparison, an entire family home typically uses about 30kWh of energy per day. Of course multiple battery units can be combined to create a larger home energy storage system—should a home need it.
