Our commitment to working safely
Our commitment to working safely
At Nova Scotia Power, there’s nothing more important than the safety of our teams and our customers. It’s meant that as the COVID-19 pandemic has evolved, we’ve had to do things differently.
Here's how our crews, teams and contractors are working safely for you.
Our Power Line Technicians
Power line technicians have been continuing to serve our customers throughout the province during the pandemic, connecting new services, restoring power outages, and making reliability improvements to the power system. Here is what you can expect from our teams as we continue to power communities safely:
- In most cases PLTs won’t have to come near your home or business.
- PLTs are being dispatched directly from their homes and will be travelling to their work sites in individual vehicles.
- They will be practicing social distancing techniques at all time.
- In the rare instances where they cannot maintain 2m/6ft physical distancing, PLTs will be wearing gloves, a face mask and a face shield.
Our Meter Readers
We paused meter reading on March 23 province-wide and now with new pandemic procedures and PPE we started up again on May 11. Here’s how our meter readers are staying safe:
- All meter readers will be wearing pandemic PPE while they read your meter
- If they need to go into your residence or business to read an indoor meter, they will be wearing gloves, a face mask and a face shield
- They will be practicing social distancing techniques on all of their routes and we are asking all customers to stay 2m/6ft from a meter reader when they come to your premise
Smart Meter Technicians
On March 14, we suspended smart meter upgrades to comply with COVID-19 prevention recommendations. We used this time to review and refine our safety protocols. Here is what you can expect from our technicians as we as we safely resume upgrades.
Our teams will be trained in COVID-19 prevention and safety protocols including:
- Enhanced personal protective equipment and physical distancing
- Disinfecting surfaces before and after work
- Contractors much complete a health and status/COVID19 symptoms form and record travel
Home Heating & Cooling Contractors
Safety is our top priority and it is essential that our network of heat pump, water heater and electric thermal storage contractors adhere to Public Health advisories including:
- Discussing the job requirements with homeowner in advance to determine the level of risk
- While onsite using appropriate PPE, practicing social distancing, disinfecting work areas before and after, and limiting time onsite and interactions with customers
- Ensuring all visits are recorded so all parties can be notified of new infections if necessary
