Crews working around the clock to restore customers’ power

HALIFAX – Less than 24 hours since the Christmas Day storm that raged across Nova Scotia reached its peak, Nova Scotia Power has restored electricity to more than 90% of customers who lost power in the storm. Crews will continue to work through the night until every customer can turn their lights back on.

“I want to thank all the crews and support staff for their incredible work – which is ongoing; they have spent the holidays away from their families,” said Stephen Pothier, Nova Scotia Power Storm Lead. “We aren’t going to stop working until the last customer is restored.”

Crews have successfully restored power to more than 143,000 customers as of 6:30 p.m. today (TUESDAY), down from a total of 158,000. The outage restoration team includes more than 700 people, including 450 frontline personnel: powerline technicians from Nova Scotia Power, New Brunswick Power, Saint John Energy, and contract crews from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, as well as foresters and damage assessment teams.

The winter storm that struck southwest Nova Scotia Monday afternoon and moved across the province through the evening and night, brought wind gusts that exceeded 100 km/h, and in some areas reached hurricane-force strength. This extreme weather blew trees into power lines, broke poles, and snapped lines.

Nova Scotia Power expects the final customers to be restored by noon tomorrow (WEDNESDAY), other than those with damage to their electrical equipment or other extenuating circumstances. The last outages restored will be those impacting just a few customers each.

“We thank our customers for their patience and their support,” Pothier said. “It means a lot to the crews and to all the people who are working behind the scenes to get customers’ power back on safely and as quickly as possible.”

Customers who are still waiting for their power to be restored are encouraged to stay safe, check in on relatives and neighbours and to call Nova Scotia Power if they see a downed line. NS Power has opened its payment depots in Shelburne, Kentville, Stellarton, and Chester as comfort centres for anyone who needs a place to warm up, have a coffee, or recharge their phones. These depots – which were opened to the public this summer to provide customer service – are serving as comfort centres from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. today and again tomorrow beginning at 8 a.m.:

Customers should also check their own electrical equipment for damage, such as their meter mast. This is the tube that connects the service line to their house to the electric meter. If customers have damage to their meter mast, it is essential for them to contact an electrical contractor and have that damage repaired to restore power to their home.
