HALIFAX – With a number of power outages in the province restored overnight, Nova Scotia Power crews continue work this morning to tackle smaller area and individual customer outages. The goal is to have customers restored by the end of the day (Monday); some customer outages in the hardest hit areas of the province may push into Tuesday.
Thanks to night crews from Nova Scotia and New Brunswick working determinedly to restore power, more than 5,500 customers in the Antigonish, Stellarton and Port Hawkesbury areas awoke to their power restored as of 6am this morning.
Crews have been pushing hard through some challenging weather conditions to get the power back on to all customers. At the peak of the storm, approximately 67,000 Nova Scotia Power customers lost power. With 90% of customers restored by Sunday morning, the remaining damage and outages continue to be a challenge to crews with multiple trees entangled in power lines.
As soon as it became clear that some of the estimated restore times may not be met, the company reached out directly to those customers to update them by phone.
“We are sorry that some of our customers woke up this morning without power,” says Paul Casey, Storm Lead and Senior Director of Transmission & Distribution. “It’s Monday morning and with the return of the work week, we know this is a disruption to the lives of our customers. Our crews are at full strength along with over 100 contract crews, plus there are hundreds more employees working behind the scenes and we won’t rest until your power is back on.”
The storm that began on Friday night encased trees and equipment throughout the province in a thick, heavy coat of snow and ice. Along with more than 300 powerline technicians that continue to work in the province, specialized tree crews have been critical to the continued efforts to restore power to our customers.
The majority of the remaining outages are smaller area and individual customer outages of under 100 customers each.
Customers still without power should also check their own equipment for damage. It is essential that customers who have damage to their service mast – the tube that connects the service line to their house to the electric meter – have that damage repaired by an electrical contractor. This equipment belongs to the customer, and Nova Scotia Power can’t restore power until the service mast is repaired.
