A Letter to Greenfield and Middlefield
September 24, 2026
Thank you to everyone who joined us for our community reliability meeting in Greenfield on September 22, 2026. We appreciated the opportunity to meet with residents, answer your questions, address concerns, and share updates on the work to improve reliability in your area. We were also pleased to share the progress made since our last meeting in May 2025, including approximately $2.2 million in reliability improvements and an additional $5.8 million in planned investments to further strengthen the local electricity system.
We know reliable power is important to your homes, businesses, and daily lives, and we recognize the frustration outages can cause. While there is more work to do, the investments underway reflect our ongoing commitment to improving your power service and building a stronger, more resilient system for your community.
Improvements in Your Community
Recent investments in the Greenfield, Middlefield, and surrounding areas have focused on strengthening the electricity grid through infrastructure upgrades, vegetation management, trimming and removing trees, replacing equipment, and installing protective devices. Together, these improvements are helping to reduce outages, improve restoration times, and improve your overall power service. Investments included:
- The LaBelle Road reliability upgrade project: A $1.6 million investment that upgraded more than 5 km of power lines (single phase to three phase), replaced aging poles and transformers, and installed modern protective devices, all to improve reliability.
- Proactively replacing aging electrical equipment, including poles, crossarms, and insulators along Highway 210 between Greenfield and Middlefield to help reduce equipment-related outages.
- Vegetation management: Trimming and removing trees along nearly 8 km of distribution power line between 2024–2026, addressing the leading cause of outages across Nova Scotia.
- Installing TripSaver reclosers, which can automatically restore power following temporary interruptions, helping reduce both the number and length of outages.
Looking Ahead
Our work to strengthen reliability in your area continues, with approximately $5.8 million in additional reliability investments planned over the coming years. These investments include:
- Upgrades to the transmission line serving the Middlefield substation, including transmission structures and equipment from Maitland Bridge to Middlefield and strengthening critical infrastructure.
- The Wellington phase addition project, which will upgrade the power lines with new wires, upgrade equipment, and better support customer load along Highway 210 from Wellington to Buckfield, improving long-term reliability and strengthening the local distribution system.
- Ongoing proactive maintenance and system improvements, including vegetation management, trimming and removing trees, replacing equipment, inspections, and other system upgrades designed to help prevent outages from happening.
Our Five-Year Reliability Plan (2025–2029)
We are now in the second year of our reliability plan, which includes a $1.3 billion investment to further strengthen the electricity grid. This work involves an average annual investment of $250 million in projects across Nova Scotia, including installing protective devices, upgrading lines, replacing poles and transformers, and increasing vegetation management to reduce outages. Investment in tree trimming has steadily increased—from $25 million in 2022 to $32 million in 2023, and to $45 million annually since 2024.
Thank you. Hearing directly from customers is important to us and helps us better understand local concerns and priorities. We remain committed to keeping you informed as we continue to work to improve reliability in your community.
Sincerely,
Damian Daniels | Manager, Reliability Engagement | Nova Scotia Power
