Do you know my power is out?
Not always. There are many reasons why the power goes out. It could be because of severe weather, damage to lines or a problem with equipment in your home. If your power is out and there’s no obvious reason, call our outage line anytime at 1-877-428-6004.
Why am I the only house on the block without power?
There are a few reasons this could happen:
- Fuses or circuit breakers in your home may have switched off
- Tree limbs may have fallen on the line serving your home
- Fuses on the transformer that serves your home may be disconnected or damaged
- The line feeding the transformer may be damaged.
Why would your crews pass my house without repairing anything?
It may be because work at a nearby location must be done before power can be restored to you and your neighbours.
Can I pay an electrician to change my Nova Scotia Power service wires or cables?
No. Electricians are not allowed to work on Nova Scotia Power lines between the pole or transformer and your house. Your electrician handles work that needs to be done from the meter to inside your house, including your circuit breakers and home wiring. We take care of everything else.
If my lights come on, will they stay on?
Once power is restored, we make every effort to keep it on but as we repair other parts of our system, some interruptions may occur. And when outages are caused by weather, continuing bad weather could cause restored power to go out again.
Why does my neighbour have power and I don't?
Storm damage can affect main power lines, individual circuits or both. It's possible that your individual circuit is damaged or your home could be on a different main power line than your neighbours. It also may be possible that your home needs internal electrical repairs before you can receive service.
How long will I be without power?
We work hard to restore power as safely and quickly as possible. While we may not be able to tell you exactly when your power will be restored, we will provide our best estimate based on the worst-case scenario.
Why do crews leave my neighbourhood when I still have no power?
There are several reasons for this:
- We send employees to survey storm damaged areas before we begin any repairs. This lets us restore power faster and helps us immediately address any dangerous situations.
- We may need to work elsewhere to fix the problem affecting you and your neighbours.
- We may need to work on a problem that will restore power to a greater number of customers.
Why are my electric motors or machines running backward?
Turn off your machinery right away and call us. A technician will determine whether electric power phases were connected properly.
