Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI) recognizes the importance of protecting the privacy of our customers. The Customer Privacy Policy is a formal statement of the principles and guidelines for the collection, use and disclosure of customer personal information as set out in the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act, known as PIPEDA.

What Constitutes personal information? Personal information is any information about an identifiable individual, such as a person’s name, address or credit card information but does not include the name, title, business address or telephone number of an employee of an organization.

The principles of the Customer Privacy Policy guides the way NSPI collects, uses and discloses its customers' personal information.

These principles mandate that NSPI:

NSPI will safe-guard personal customer information under its control and have a Privacy Officer to ensure compliance with this Policy's principles.

Identify purposes for collection

NSPI will identify the purposes for collecting personal information at or before the time the information is collected. NSPI collects personal information only for the following purposes:

  • To recommend products and services to meet your needs
  • To market or provide electricity products and services
  • To manage and develop NSPI’s business and operations
  • To meet legal and regulatory requirements
  • To provide you with information about NSPI’s products and services

NSPI seeks the customer's understanding and consent for the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information.

Limit collection NSPI limits the collection of personal information only for the purposes identified. The type of information NSPI usually collects and maintain in your customer file may include:

  • Email address
  • Telephone number
  • Date of birth
  • Credit history
  • Transaction history
Limit use, disclosure and retention

NSPI will not use or disclose personal information beyond the stated purposes for which it was collected, except with the consent of the customer or as permitted or required by law. We will retain personal information only as long as necessary to fulfill those purposes. NSPI occasionally collects personal information through its website (www.nspower.ca). This information is collected, used and disclosed according to the same policies and procedures as any other information provided to NSPI.

Ensure accuracy NSPI will endeavour to ensure a customer's personal information is accurate, complete and up-to-date. NSPI relies on its customers to inform us of any relevant changes to their personal information.

Provide safeguards NSPI will protect personal information with security safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of that information. NSPI audits its procedures and security measures regularly to ensure that they are appropriate and being administered properly.

Openness NSPI will make available information on our Privacy Policy and its practices relating to the management of personal information available to customers.

Changes to this Privacy Policy This policy may be amended from time to time since NSPI regularly reviews and updates in policies and procedures.
