Phone Scam Warning

June 8, 2011

HALIFAX, NS – Nova Scotia Power is warning its customers of a telephone scam that has been reported to the company. In this scam, a caller claims to be a representative of NS Power or another company, most commonly referred to as “Hydro Power” or “Hydro Saver.” The caller then offers the customer an electronic device that will allegedly reduce their power bill by 30-50%. Customers are asked to make a credit card payment over the phone.

These calls are not from Nova Scotia Power and the purported energy savings devices don’t exist. NS Power is not aware of any cases in which customers have actually provided their credit card information to the caller, but anyone who has should contact their local police.

If you receive a suspicious call, you are encouraged to phone NS Power’s Customer Service line at 1-800-428-6230. Our representatives will collect information about the call and report any suspicious calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre – www.antifraudcentre.ca.
