HALIFAX, NS – Nova Scotia Power has restored electricity to more than 60 per cent of customers who lost power during the storm that raged across the province Friday afternoon and into Saturday.
Nova Scotia Power crews, assisted by crews with Emera Utility Services and contract crews from New Brunswick have been working through extremely challenging conditions in their efforts to restore power safely and as quickly as possible.
Heavy, wet and deep snow has made it difficult to access some damaged areas and restore power to customers.
Some local roads in the hardest hit areas, particularly in Eastern Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, have been difficult to access in order for damage assessment teams and line crews to assess damage and carry out repairs.
Nova Scotia Power has two helicopters in the air assessing damage in those areas and is working closely with the provincial transportation department to get these roads cleared.
“Our crews have made substantial gains to get power back on in our customers’ homes and businesses. Once we can reach an area, repair times are relatively quick. We’re throwing all our resources at this, and our work will continue until every customer has been restored,” said Paul Casey, NS Power Storm Lead and Senior Director of Transmission & Distribution.
Most damage has been caused by a build-up of heavy, wet snow on trees and tree branches that droop down on to lines.
Estimated restoration times are being reassessed in areas where crews have yet to gain access. Nova Scotia Power is doing everything it can to restore all customers who lost power during the storm by the end of Sunday. Nova Scotia Power’s customer care team will attempt to contact each customer whose estimated restoration time is moving from Saturday to Sunday.
