Nova Scotia Power prepares for forecasted storm

February 4, 2016

HALIFAX, NS – Nova Scotia Power is preparing for a storm system that’s expected to bring freezing rain and wet snow to Nova Scotia Friday and is encouraging customers to be prepared as well.

Nova Scotia Power is monitoring the track of the storm. If the forecast freezing rain followed by snow materializes, snow and ice buildup on electrical equipment and trees and trees or branches falling onto power lines may cause outages.

The potential for outages is of particular concern in areas hardest hit by last weekend’s storm because it has left trees weakened and damaged.

“We’re moving crews and trucks into position around the province in advance of this storm, so we’ll be prepared to respond to any outages,” said Paul Casey, NS Power Storm Lead and Senior Director of Transmission & Distribution. “We encourage our customers to be ready as well."

These crews will begin repairs as soon as conditions are safe. Nova Scotia Power will provide regular updates throughout the storm and afterward on www.nspower.ca/outages and on Twitter and Facebook.

As the utility takes steps to prepare for a major storm, we want our customers to be prepared as well.

Here are some storm preparation tips:

  • Have an emergency kit ready with flashlights, a battery-operated radio and fresh water
  • Ensure backup generators are installed by a qualified electrician
  • Keep portable heaters away from curtains or other flammable materials
  • If you rely on well water, fill your bathtub with water and have a bucket handy to use to flush  your toilet
  • Charge all cell phones, devices and battery packs
  • If you lose power, turn off and unplug electrical equipment, such as TVs, DVD players, computers and tablets

To find out information about outages and estimated restoration times, customers can visit our outage map www.nspower.ca/outages, or call our outage information line 1-877-428-6004.  Our map shows large outages only.
