The rates and regulations for selling power are approved by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board. Complete copies of our Rates and Regulations are available here.

Time of Day Rates work in conjunction with electric thermal storage heating systems. This results in electricity use during times of the day when the cost of energy is less than the standard rate.
Moving and name changes. Please give ten days notice to allow Nova Scotia Power to disconnect your power or change to a new address. Please notify Nova Scotia Power immediately if you want to change the name on your bill. You are responsible for payment as long as the bill is in your name.
Connection charges. There is a charge to hook up new service, move service from one location to another, and to change the name on a power bill. Nova Scotia Power may also charge a deposit. Please contact our customer service representatives for details.
Deposits. When requested by the Company, a customer shall deposit with the Company a sum equal to estimated charges for three months' service when billed bimonthly, and approximately two months' when bills are rendered monthly. This deposit is to be held by the Company as security for the payment of its bills. When the customer ceases to use the service and pays all bills, or the Company deems a deposit is no longer required, the deposit with interest is to be returned to the customer. The Company shall review its customer deposits every two years with a view to determining whether or not a deposit is still required.
Interest and NSF charges. Nova Scotia Power charges interest on amounts owing after your bill is due. Nova Scotia Power must receive payment by the due date in order to avoid interest charges.
There is also a charge for NSF cheques and insufficient funds for Automatic Payment withdrawals.
Terms you should know:
Base charge is a fixed amount that residential and small general service customers pay Nova Scotia Power to provide electric service. This fee does not include your energy charges.
Billing date is the day we print your bill. Your bill includes the payments we have received and electricity you have used since your last bill.
Energy charge is the price you pay for the electricity (kWh's) you have used.
Kilowatt (kW) is a unit of power. 1 kilowatt = 1000 watts.
KWh stands for kilowatt hour. Electricity is measured in kilowatt hours. One kilowatt hour (kWh) is 1,000 watts of electricity consumed for one hour. For example, one 100 watt light bulb burning for 10 hours would use one kWh of electricity.
Meter readings determine the amount of electricity you have used. Subtract the ‘last meter reading' from the ‘new meter reading' to get the number of kilowatt hours consumed since your last bill. Contact Nova Scotia Power for information on how to read your meter.
Multiplier extends the recording capability of some meters. For example, a meter with a multiplier of 10 registers one unit for every 10 kWh consumed. To get the actual number of kWh's used over a billing period, subtract the ‘last meter reading' from the ‘new meter reading' and multiply the difference by the ‘multiplier' shown on the bill.
For commercial customers only:
Demand is the rate at which electricity is being used at a given time. Demand is often measured in kilowatts (kW). Many commercial and industrial customers' bills include charges for peak demand recorded on a demand meter. Only sustained demands fully register on the meter.
Demand charge is the amount that general service and industrial customers pay Nova Scotia Power to cover the cost of building and maintaining the generation, transmission and distribution capacity to meet their maximum demand for electricity. This amount does not include energy charges.

Bill Payment Plans:
1) Equal billing is a monthly billing plan which allows you to spread your electricity costs evenly over a full year.
2) Automatic payment lets you pay your power bill directly from your bank account – either monthly or bi-monthly.
3) Seasonal billing is a plan for cottage owners. Your cottage meter is read only in the summer. No bills arrive in the winter.

Ways to Pay your Power Bill:
1) Telephone or PC banking. You can pay your power bill by phone or over the internet with most major banks. Contact your bank for details.
Please note, your bill may not show payments made less than 10 days before the billing date. Please allow sufficient time for bank or agent payments to be processed.
2) By mail. Send your payment to the address listed above. If you wish to start or stop receiving a return envelope with your bill, call us at

3) In person at any authorized payment agent. Call us, or visit our website, for the locations nearest you.
4) At most banks or full service credit unions. Please check with your branch for information about applicable service charges.
