How does home battery storage work?
A home battery storage system stores energy in two ways. If your home has an alternative energy source like solar panels, the energy generated can be captured and stored in the home battery storage system to use later. Alternatively, the home battery storage system can charge directly from the grid, such as during off-peak hours when our Time of Day (TOD) rates are lower. The battery can discharge and provide energy during peak hours when rates are higher to offset your electricity costs. The battery can also be used as a backup power source in the event of an outage. Please note that battery storage alone is not eligible for the TOD rate but your home can take advantage of the TOD rate if a thermal storage heating system is already installed in the home.

What are the benefits?
Energy storage systems help us take full advantage of renewable energy resources. Whether it’s solar panels on your roof, or wind energy on the grid, storage helps ensure we’re capturing the clean energy you're producing and reducing your reliance on fossil-fuel energy use during peak times. A home battery storage system can also save you money on your electricity bill by taking advantage of Time of Day rates, and/or storing energy from alternative sources. It also provides peace of mind from knowing you have a backup power source in the event of an outage.

How much capacity does it have?
The capacity of a single home battery storage unit can range from 5kWh to 13kWh+. As an example, the Tesla Powerwall has a capacity of 13.5kWh. Multiple units can often be added together to create a larger home storage system. To put that into context, the average three-bedroom family home uses about 30kWh of energy per day.

What happens if there is an outage?
With our Maritime weather, outages can occasionally happen. In the event of an outage, a home battery storage system can provide enough energy to keep the essentials going. Depending on the size of the battery, you can back-up your refrigerator, Wi-Fi modem, cellphone/laptop charging, and a few lights for a period of up to 24 hours.

What is the retail value of a home battery storage system?
A number of variables impact the cost of home battery storage including battery capacity, brand and installation complexity. As an example, the installed cost of the Tesla Powerwall 2.0 system is approximately $14,000 CAD.
