Nova Scotians have told us that they are looking for ways to reduce their energy costs. Living in a more energy efficient way means making small changes that can make a big difference. A good place to start is in your home. Changing light bulbs to new compact florescent bulbs or washing your clothes in cold water instead of hot are easy ways to reduce how much energy you use.
We’re taking action as a company to help reduce the environmental footprint of our daily operations. Here’s information on some of the energy efficiency projects we have on the go inside of Nova Scotia Power.
- We’re working hard to improve how efficiently our coal, oil and natural gas-fired generating stations operate. We are making a number of upgrades and maintenance improvements to help us use less energy to make more power.
- We have a vehicle efficiency policy that requires employees to limit idling, scrape windshields instead of defrosting by running the vehicle, limit drive-thru use, travel within certain speeds and use the most efficient rental vehicles available. We are also exploring GPS-based technologies for our company vehicles to see if we might be able to improve efficiency and safety while reducing maintenance.
- We are retrofitting Nova Scotia Power facilities with more efficient lighting. We are also installing remote meters at larger facilities that will allow us to download detailed information about our energy use.
- We have upgraded our computer equipment, replacing old printers with a smaller number of much more efficient multi-function devices. We are creating energy specifications for the next generation of computer equipment to come into the company, and we are replacing old monitors with new LCD screens.
