LED Holiday Lighting Exchanges

May your holidays be bright.

May your holidays be bright.

LED Holiday Light ExchangeEvery fall, NS Power collects traditional holiday lights and exchanges them for new LED holiday lights at participating local tree lighting ceremonies across Nova Scotia. To date, it is estimated that 1,215,378 kWh of electricity have been saved through this program, the equivalent of powering 135 average homes.

This season, NS Power and Efficiency Nova Scotia have partnered to promote the use of energy efficient LED lights and provide Nova Scotians with the opportunity to receive a free string of LED lights, in exchange for two strings of traditional glass holiday lights.

From November to December, the exchanges take place at community tree lighting ceremonies across the province. Bring in two sets of glass holiday lights for recycling and receive one set of LED holiday lights for free.

Last year, 69 Nova Scotian communities exchanged strands of old holiday lights for approximately 10,000 new LED strings - that's enough to power 35 average Nova Scotian homes.

LED holiday lights are widely available at local retailers in a variety of colours, string lengths and bulb sizes and have a number of benefits:

  • Use 90% less electricity and last 10 times longer than traditional glass holiday lights
  • Produce very little heat, reducing the risk of fire
  • Contain no glass and are durable and safe
