"The leadership that NSPI has shown on this project will certainly stimulate other organizations to join in the vision of a new science centre in Nova Scotia. We are grateful to your organization for it’s commitment to the community and look forward to working with you over the next 25 years."
Rick Emberley, Chair, Discovery Centre
Nova Scotia Power is proud to partner with Discovery Centre. The Halifax-based science centre has begun the construction of its future home, which is the currently undeveloped section of Emera and Nova Scotia Power’s headquarters on the Halifax waterfront.
Discovery Centre will join part of a growing, vibrant community on the waterfront, which includes Pier 21, Bishop’s Landing, the Seaport Farmers Market and the NSCAD Port Campus.
Established in 1985 as a private not-for-profit charitable organization, Discovery Centre has evolved from a travelling science exhibition to a symbol of education, innovation, entrepreneurship and, of course, family fun and enjoyment for over 120,000 Nova Scotians and visitors to our province annually.
We believe that the young minds we engage in science today will be the researchers and engineers who devise solutions for our future needs as a society, including our energy needs. We want to supportive of that. Discovery Centre has provided hands-on demonstrations that prove science is both fun and interesting to young minds for 25 years. We’re pleased to offer them free rent for 25 years at Lower Water Street and $1 million over five years to help create their exhibits and operate in their new space.
Our donation is from a fund that Emera shareholders provide to Nova Scotia Power so that we can support worthy community initiatives. This most certainly fits the bill as an initiative that will benefit all of Nova Scotia.
Discovery Centre will take up residence in southwest section of the complex. For more information on Discovery Centre, visit www.discoverycentre.ns.ca or beelieve.ca.
