NS Power employee coding the future

In 2013, Jennifer Liu, a Project Coordinator at NS Power, attended her first workshop held by the Halifax Chapter of Ladies Learning Code—a national not-for-profit that teaches women, men and children beginner computer programming skills.

“During the six hour workshop, I was able to learn the basics of JavaScript and build an interactive website from scratch,” recalled Jen. “That felt so good to accomplish! I wanted to share this feeling and encourage more women to consider coding so I started volunteering with the organization.”

Three years later, Jen is now the Halifax Chapter Lead and volunteers her time designing the chapter’s programming. She works with mentors and community partners like Volta Labs, Innovacorp and NTT Data to promote the cause.

“Digital literacy for women and youth is rapidly gaining attention in the tech community, in education circles and even on public agendas,” said Jen. “Our monthly workshops have been delivered to hundreds of women and youth in Halifax.”

Due to the success of their workshops, Girls Learning Code and Kids Learning Code were launched to bring 8-13 year olds together for workshops and camps to learn about technology in a fun and collaborative environment.
