NS Power to host solar energy workshop for installers

Fri November 6, 2009

Halifax, NS – Nova Scotia Power will host a Canadian Solar Industries Association (CanSIA) Solar Hot Water Installation Workshop this weekend at the Nova Scotia Community College’s Waterfront Campus in Dartmouth.

Nova Scotia’s solar industry has experienced steady growth as technologies evolve and the public becomes increasingly aware of the energy savings associated with installing solar technologies. With increased, federal, provincial and municipal programs supporting the deployment of solar domestic hot water systems, demand for certified installers is expected to increase.

“As part of its focus on conservation and energy efficiency, Nova Scotia Power is working on a variety of programs that will help our customers use less energy,” said David MacLaughlin, Renewable Program Manager with NS Power. “We believe solar energy technologies will be an increasingly important part of the energy solution in the future and we want to be part of ensuring installers are ready as the popularity of solar grows."

Saturday’s workshop, which has sold out all 50 seats, is intended help the Nova Scotia solar energy marketplace ensure domestic solar hot water system installations are performed safely and by professional and trained installers. Completion of the workshop and passing the exam are two of the required steps to become a CanSIA Certified Solar Hot Water System Installer.

Nova Scotia Power is hosting the workshop as part of their work to develop a sustainable network of certified solar hot water system installers to support the installation of solar hot water systems for customers province-wide. Demand for Saturday’s event has been high and Nova Scotia Power will look at holding an additional workshop should interest continue to grow. Parties interested in attending a future workshop are invited to contact Nova Scotia Power at 428-6939.
