Independent Power Producers

An increasing amount of electricity is being generated in Nova Scotia by producers other than Nova Scotia Power.

Government policy obliges NS Power to buy electricity from independent power producers who are now playing a large role in helping meet Nova Scotia’s Renewable Energy Standards. Most of these companies supply wind energy, though some provide power from more unconventional sources including a project generating up to two MW of electricity from methane gas released by organic material at the former Upper Sackville landfill.

Today, the vast majority of commercial-scale wind turbines in Nova Scotia are owned by Independent companies.
